It’s a new week in the Mystery Quilt sew along hosted by Riley Blake Designs and that means a new free block pattern! Today we’re learning the Windmill Block – RBD Block Challenge, this gorgeous block designed by Amy Smart from Diary of a Quilter!
Isn’t this such a fun block?! I love the pinwheel look to it, and it gives you so many options for playing with fabric colors and choices.
Amy Smart from Diary of a Quilter designed this week’s block for the RBD Block Challenge. She has a brand new collection out called Notting Hill! You might have seen a couple of my recent projects made with it, I am using it for my Vintage Stars quilt we are doing a sew along with, and my Dresden Project Bag!
I am sewing with my new collection, Stardust, out later this month! I am really having a great time choosing fabric for this sew along from it! You can see my other projects here:
- Week 1 – Pinwheel Star Block
- Week 2 – Shining Star Block
- Week 3 – Framed Flower Block
- Week 4 – Stella Block
- Week 5 – Ocean Waves Block

I’m adding Sashiko stitching to each of my blocks with my Baby Lock Sashiko machine. It is a specialty stitch machine that does the most darling little running stitch -I think it’s the perfect little touch for all these blocks!
Next week we have a beautiful block designed by Rachel Erickson of Citrus and Mint! I can’t wait for you to see it!
You can share your blocks on Instagram with #RBDBlockChallenge and in the RBD Block Challenge Facebook Group.
