I’m so excited about this new project! My good friend Amy Latta and I have wanted to do a project together for a while now and we thought it would be great to do a combo Hand Lettering/Embroidery project! This How Great Thou Art Hymn Embroidery Hoop Art is my version of the project and I’m so in love with how it turned out.
Amy is so talented! She’s a hand lettering extraordinaire with multiple books, tv appearances and all sorts of awesome projects. So when we were coming up with a project we wanted to combine two of our favorite skills – hand lettering for her and embroidery for me!
We discussed a theme and decided to do a hymn – How Great Thou Art is both of our favorites. One of my favorite memories is my uncle and grandpa singing this song. It’s so special to me. It’s a great project with Easter just around the corner too!
Amy hand lettered and drew the design and I just stitched it up! You can find the design as a free printable and pattern at her blog, the link is at the bottom of the post. But first I want to show you how I stitched the design!
How Great Thou Art Hymn Embroidery Hoop Art Tutorial
Materials:
- How Great Thou Art Lettering Design from Amy Latta
- 8″ Embroidery Hoop
- 12″ square of light background fabric – I used Blossom in Rose Gold from Christopher Thompson and Riley Blake. It has the prettiest rose gold metallic shimmer!
- Aurifil Embroidery Floss colors:
- 4129
- 2820
- 2435
- 2440
- 2230
- 1248
- Marking Pen for Transferring
- Glue for finishing
Instructions:
Print out the design from Amy’s Blog. Using a marking pen with a lightbox or window, or an iron-on transfer pen, transfer the design to the background fabric.
Embroidery the Design with the following stitches:
Stitch the lettering with color 1248 using a layered back stitch. To do this, outline the letters with back stitch, then fill in the inner spaces with back stitches, layering the length and placement to give it a woven look.
Stitch the rings of the wreath around the lettering with color 4129 using a back stitch. I didn’t go around the circle 4 times, I just stitched the lines as Amy drew them.
Stitch the leaves of the wreath with color 4129 and small satin stitches
Stitch the leaves around the flowers with colors 4129 and 2850 with satin stitches. Alternate leaves between the two colors however you’d like.
Stitch the three flowers with colors 2230 and 2440 being the small flower and color 2435 being the larger flower. All are woven roses.
Stitch two or three French Knots in the centers of the woven roses with a contrasting pink color.
If you are leaving your project in the hoop, finish the back of the hoop by making sure the fabric is nice and tight in the hoop. Trim off the excess fabric about 1/2″ outside the edge of the hoop. Glue the fabric down to the inside of the smaller hoop on the back of the design. If desired, finish the back of the hoop with an 8″ piece of felt or scrapbook paper.
You could also use the design as the center of a mini quilt, mug rug or pillow!
I can’t wait to see your versions of our How Great Thou Art Hymn Embroidery Hoop Art!

Sooooo beautiful. My grandpa was in a quartet. They sang all the old hymnals. He gave me a cassette tape of their group. I still have it. I can’t wait to stitch this up.
