I am in full Spring-Decorating around here – are you? It’s finally been in the upper 60’s all week and I feel like I’m starting to thaw. It’s delightful. So I’m adding all sorts of flowers and greenery and cute Easter things around the house and I love it! I just finished up this simple and sweet Wonderland Spring Pillow – it’s perfect for a touch of color on my sofa!
One of my favorite things about having so many talented friends in the sewing/blogging world, is that I get to see all sorts of amazing new fabrics – just as they are coming out! My super talented friend Melissa from The Polkadot Chair is releasing her second fabric line, Wonderland with Riley Blake, and I think it’s one of cutest lines to come out – it’s all pretty flowers, gold accents, and little bunnies wearing floral crowns. I mean, who wouldn’t love that?
I wanted to use several of the cute prints, so I created this flower applique pillow – with a darling bunny as the center. It’s so perfect for this fabric, but you could use it to show off any line that has fun prints and a cute design you can fussy cut.
This is really simple to put together – so let’s get started!
- For Flower: 9 prints – I used a fat quarter bundle, because it’s a great way to get several prints and you have plenty leftover for other projects!
- Pillow Front – 14″ square of fabric
- Pillow Back – two 10″ x 14″ pieces of coordinating fabric
- DMC Pearl Cotton Embroidery Floss – ( I lost my color wrapper for this, but I’m almost positive it’s color 891 – sorry for not being sure!)
- 14″ square of thin batting or fusible fleece
- Wonder Under
- 3″ circle of white fabric
- 14″ pillow form
- 58″ of pom pom trim
- Flower Applique Pattern Pieces
Start by cutting out your fabric petals and fussy cutting your bunny center piece. Arrange them in the order you like. When cutting, I tried to be aware of the petal directions – so for instance my bunnies were facing the right way.
Iron fusible webbing to the wrong sides of all pieces. Fuse the center circle to the white 3″ circle. Cut another piece of fusible webbing and iron it to the back of the white piece. This will make it so the bunny circle isn’t as see-through.
Lay out all the petals in place on the fabric so the flower is off-center. Fuse the petal pieces only in place. Trim off the petals that overlap the edge. (Make sure you don’t accidentally fuse these to your ironing board.)
With a small zigzag stitch, sew around all the petals. Start at the side of the petal that doesn’t overlap, then stitch around to the other side and stop when you reach the next petal. Then start again at the center of the pillow with the next petal.
Fuse the center bunny circle over the middle of the flower. Zigzag around the bunny circle.
Place the thin batting or fusible fleece on the wrong side of the pillow front piece and pin in place (if you aren’t fusing it). Embroidery around the flower and center circle with a simple running stitch, just outside the zigzag stitching line for the petals and just inside the stitching line for the center circle.
For the envelope back pieces, sew a small hem on the bottom of one piece and the top of the other piece.
Sew the pom pom trim in place around the edge of the pillow, 3/8″ from the raw edge with the pom poms facing towards the center.
Overlap the back pieces so the piece with the hem at the bottom overlaps the piece with the hem at the top. Move the top piece up until you have a 14″ square. Place the front piece face down and sew the pillow together on all four sides with a 1/2″ seam allowance. Clip the corners.
Turn the pillow right side out, press, and insert the pillow form!
I hope you like it! Head over to visit Melissa to see all the other fun Wonderland projects!

Hey Bev, this is so pretty. Thank you, for sharing. I am going to make one at the weekend. Just need to find a nice bunny fabric for the centre piece. It’s still so cold, grey, and wet here in the UK and a Spring Pillow will help brighten the house up and should get me in the mood to bring down the Easter decor from the attic. I need sunshine!

Ah, just when I think you can’t come up with a cuter idea …you do!
I did a flower, off to one side like this on a canvas with paper a while back, I would have never though to do a fabric version like this but I love it. I’ve pinned in the honest hope that one day I will make one of these, I think it would make a lovely gift for a little girl, and I know quite a few of those who would love a new cushion for their room.

Adorable idea putting bunny in flower center. All the cute details really make pillow even more wonderful.
Have been trying to get myself to clear out sewing room so I can use new machine purchased last year. Want to make more table runners and pillow covers for Spring and Summer.
Had right shoulder replaced on 12/7 still having range of motion problem. Ran out of physical therapy time so have to work on it on my own.
Wishing you and yours wonderful Easter and Spring. How are your kids?
