When we moved into our new house last fall, I knew that redoing the dining room would be one of my first projects. We have stained wood dining furniture, and with the brown wallpapers in the room and the wood flooring, everything felt a little camouflaged and dark. So we were definitely in need of some brightening up in there!
I am so thrilled with how it turned out! Every time we walk into the room now, we notice how much lighter it is and how much bigger the room feels! The furniture really looks so much prettier too – it doesn’t blend in with the walls any longer.
Here’s a better look at the before.
The top wallpaper in there was regular paper, but the bottom was textured beadboard-style paper that the previous owners painted dark brown. Unfortunately, their cats had found how nifty the textured paper was and had a field day with it. Not so cool. So that had to come down right away! We left the chair rail; I loved the idea of having a contrast above and below it.
Ace Hardware is having a 31 Days of Color celebration for March, highlighting a different gorgeous color every day. Today’s color is the top color of my walls-it’s called April Rain by Valspar. It’s a pretty blue/gray color, with just a hint of green in it too. It reminds me of a Duster Miller plant, if you’ve ever seen one of those- such a soft color. The bottom color is Four Winds. It’s a mostly white paint but not stark white, so it does contrast with the glossy white of the chair rail. Not sure if that comes through in the photo.
Our dining room table is pretty old; it was my great grandmothers (which I love). :) So I try to protect it with tablecloths as much as I can! I have a fun collection of vintage tablecloths, and since they’re so pretty and colorful, I have them displayed on this old metal fence piece. Kind of fun, don’t you think?
I’m so excited with how the room came together. It’s so amazing what a difference paint makes!
As I mentioned, Ace Hardware is celebrating 31 Days of Color and they are having some wonderful giveaways too! Make sure you check out their online Paint Studio too – it’s great for picking colors, seeing ideas and more!
Another day, another color to inspire your home projects. Every day in March, Ace is unveiling a featured color and giving you a chance to win a $10,000 room makeover! To learn more, visit thepaintstudio.com.

Beautiful! That inspires me to put a pretty tablecloth on ours and dust and swiffer in there. Dining rooms can be taken for granted unless it’s the holidays, no? I love your pretty blue walls and the vintage linens, too!

Very nice, inviting. The vintage tablecloths with the antique table and display are perfect! I have a question. How did you hang the plates? I want to do that but don’t know how without the plate gamers that show. Thanks!
