This week’s Sewcialites 3 block is the Beacon Block by Amy Smart of Diary of a Quilter—and it’s such a lovely mix of classic and fresh design. Amy always has a way of creating blocks that feel timeless, and this one is no exception! The pinwheel center draws your eye right in, and those angled outer pieces give it that beautiful “beacon” effect, like it’s radiating outward.

I’m still sewing along with my Correspondence collection (and it’s arriving this month—yay!!). It has been so much fun working with these prints ahead of release, and I especially love how this block shows off both the florals and the softer, more subtle prints. The contrast between the center and the outer sections really makes everything pop without feeling too busy.

This block also comes together in such a satisfying way. It looks a little intricate at first glance, but it’s made up of familiar shapes, so it’s a great one to take step-by-step and enjoy the process. I always love blocks like that—they feel impressive but are still approachable.

If you’re sewing along, this is a great block to play with color placement and really make it your own. You could go bold and high contrast, or keep it soft and scrappy as I did—the design works either way beautifully.
You can grab the free pattern from Fat Quarter Shop and join in the fun! Each week, we get a brand new block from a different designer, and I just love seeing how everyone interprets them.
