Ok, friends, I need some help. Ya’ll know we’re getting ready for a Giant Road Trip here –
Well I’m almost ready.
I have my hula girl for the dash of our rented suburban . . .
I have space cleared on my refrigerator for all my new magnets . . .
I have goofy sunglasses to wear in order to embarrass my teenagers as much as possible . . .
So here’s what I still need . . .(besides psychiatric, fashion and home decor advice) . . . I need to hear from you places you think we need to see!
Here’s our route map. (Try not to choke on anything – this is shocking)
It shows us leaving and returning to Phoenix because that’s where my parents live – they’re going with us.
Here are the cities we’re trying to hit:
San Antonio, New Orleans, Atlanta, Greensboro NC, maybe a jaunt over to the Outer Banks of NC, Nashville, Memphis (Graceland, duh), back across the 40 through Amarillo, then back to Phoenix.
So do you know of a great place to see? I’m open to anything – from cool to historical to weird. (Remember, we’re traveling with a wide variety of ages here, got to keep everyone interested)
What about great places to eat? We typically try to stay away from “Chain” restaurants. So the more local the better. What do you think? Best place for creole in New Orleans? What about Atlanta? Where do you get barbecue in Nashville? And most importantly, where do you eat dessert in all those cities??
I really appreciate any advice you have – and I’m going to do my best to post about our adventures along the way – so you’ll get to join in the fun too. :)
PS – I’ve added the “Road Trip Fun” button to the site – it’s up there at the top. And there are a few new activity links on both the pages for kids and for us. Check them out!

These look like our road trips!
The River walk is always the place to go in San Antonio. Shopping downtown at the Mercado and of course, seeing The Alamo. There are a ton of great barbeque places in TX. When I am at the Mercado, I like to go to Mi Tierra for good Mexican food.

I am in Plainview Texas!! You have to stop here and take some pics with the fiberglass cows! We are home to Jimmy Dean and Jamar Wall (just got drafted to play for the Dallas Cowboys). We also have wonderful mexican food at Jalisco’s….carne asada tacos….MMMMMMM
When y’all go through Amarillo Texas you MUST take your spray paint and paint your names on the cadillacs at Cadillac Ranch! Fun thing to do and great photo op! Perfectly legal and encouraged. Amarillo has a sweet little zoo that is free. They also have an out of the way burger dive called Arnold’s that makes regular real burgers. They also make a burger that will feed 4…no joke!! It is as big as a dinner plate. They also have Texas shaped burgers.
I will send you links if you would like!

Man! Ya’ll do road trips right! Haha! O-K-L-A-H-O-M-A! I can’t believe you’ll be headed out as I’m coming in. Too bad. You must stop at Big Truck Tacos http://www.bigtrucktacos.com/btt/ or if you’re in the mood for Sushi (I know, weird in OK, but it’s SO GOOD!) go to Sushi Neko http://www.sushineko.com/portal.html. If you’re interested in cowboy and Indian history, definitely stop by The National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum http://www.nationalcowboymuseum.org/. I’m so excited for you!

hey, I live in raleigh, nc which is like 80 miles east of greensboro. if you go to greensboro, there is a good restaurant called Lucky 32 (www.lucky32.com)…the outer banks are great but a looong hual from Greensboro! if you are on 40 East you could go to Wilmington, NC (beach) instead…when you start back west there is a sign that says ‘Barstow, CA xxx miles’ that’s pretty cool…in Barstow there is supposedly a sign that says ‘Wilmington, NC xxx miles’.

I see you’ll be passing through the Mobile, AL area. If you’re riding through at meal time, you should definitely go to Wintzell’s. They have awesome seafood! And there’s a few different locations, so you’re bound to be passing by one of them.

well, in ATL i would definitely do the aquarium, the world coca cola, and maybe a braves game… and go to the varsity (right near the braves field) for burgers/chili dogs/slaw dogs. my husband is from atlanta and our house is just north of there in suwanee.

in oklahoma city, make sure you are there on a weekday, the city shuts down on the weekend, there is a beautiful memorial and museum and if you can get out of the city and closer to lawton, the wildlife reserve is a must see… all the buffalo and prairie dogs are so cool! and there is a little town kind of in the middle of nowhere called

meers and there is a restaurant and they serve the hugest burgers and they actually have their own steer and grind their own sirloin daily… but it’s really rustic… so that’s my two cents on your road trip! have fun!

That sounds like a great trip that will give your family tons of great memories.
It looks like you make be going through or near Truth or Consequences, NM. You could see Turtle Top mountain and Elephant Butte Dam if you’d like. Not too much around that area, a few museums and hot springs, but at least you’d see a couple cool things in NM instead of just driving through
As for restaurants, I think I’d watch a whole bunch of Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives on youtube and pick my favorites near where you are driving :) That’s my plan for any future roadtrips.
