It’s time to start thinking about Halloween costumes!! Woohoo!
I am so excited to be participating in Andrea from The Train to Crazy’s Handmade Costume Series again this year!
Since my kids aren’t into wearing costumes anymore, I decided to make a super cute Mini Halloween Top Hat Headband for the series! It’s perfect for adding just a touch of Halloween to your outfit – without going all out.
It’s even a no-sew project! (though you can sew it if you feel strongly about that). It would be super cute for a party or to wear to work if you want to show a little Halloween spirit.
It’s so easy to do – it would be fun for a dress up box too!
Ready for a tutorial?
Here’s your materials list:
- Sheet of stiff felt (black)
- Trim for top of hat, bottom of hat, and brim (you only need about 10″ of each of these, except for the eyelet. That’s closer to a yard.)
- Feather
- Chiffon flower or something similar
- Hot Glue Gun/Glue
- Headband
- Top Hat Pattern

Start by cutting out your felt hat pieces.
Glue the top trim all around the edge of the top piece – so the trim overlaps the edge just a bit. Making a huge hot glue mess on the felt is optional, but ok since it will be inside the hat.
Burning the snot out of your fingers during this tutorial is optional too. Not that I did that or anything.
Make the middle part of the hat by forming the middle section into a circle and overlapping the ends 1/4″. Glue the ends together.
Hot glue the top of the hat to the top of the middle section.
Glue your base trim onto the one piece of the base of the hat the same way you did the top.
Glue the second base piece to the wrong side of this piece, sandwiching the trim between the two layers.
Glue the top part of the hat to the center of the base.
Add your trim around the base of the middle section next. I used a wide eyelet trim and covered that with ric rac. I left the ends of the eyelet long for a little tail and overlapped the ric rac in the back.
Glue a fancy button over the place on the back where the trim overlaps.
Add a little embellishment to the side of your hat. I used a funky polka dot feather and a little chiffon flower. So fun!
Glue your hat to an elastic or thin headband for wearing. That finishes it off!
Isn’t it silly and awesome?
Make sure you head over to The Train to Crazy to check out the other costumes in the series! They are all so cute!
