I reaallllly love fun and unique jewelry.
Ok. So I love all jewelry. But there is something special about a jewelry piece that doesn’t come from your average store – plus it’s so fun to make things that are a little more personal and fit my style. That’s just the case with this little “Hello” embroidered pendant necklace.
I picked up this little wood pendant on Etsy ages ago and I’ve been dying to make it up, but I couldn’t decide what to put in it. I was totally over thinking it. So I decided to just dive in and embroider something fun and simple. And what’s more simple than “hello”?
I pretty much adore it. It’s simple and sweet – and it only took my about a half hour to do. Love that too.
This idea would be easy to do with pretty much any kind of pendant too – if you don’t like wood you could use any metal base and coordinating cabochon. (Cabochon sounds fancy, but it’s just a piece that fits in the pendant. In this case it’s a clear glass dome.)
So are you ready for a tutorial? Seriously this is so fast.
You’ll need:
- a pendant base and cabochon. I bought mine here.
- fabric
- embroidery thread
- mod podge
- e-6000 glue
- chain and closure
Here’s a shot of my wood base and cabochon. You can use any size, you’ll just need to adjust your embroidery accordingly.
Decide on your base fabric and put it in a small embroidery hoop. Trace the cabochon on the section of fabric you’d like to use with a disappearing ink marker.
Now draw out what you are going to embroidery. You can do anything you’d like, I recommend keeping it a simple word or image so that it is easy to see.
For the embroidery, I used 2 strands of floss and did a simple backstitch for the letters. You can find instructions on a backstitch on the How To Do That – Embroidery Page.
You’ll want to use tiny stitches.
Once your embroidery is finished, trim around the circle you traced around the cabochon, you’ll want about an extra 1 1/2″ all the way around.
Now this is optional, but I like to use a very light coat of mod podge to glue the embroidery to the cabochon. It keeps the fabric from slipping around.
Place your fabric over the cabochon and wrap the ends around to the back. Pull the fabric tight without distorting it, so there are no puckers in the fabric around the edges.
(It was completely accidental, but I love that my little French Knot looks like a heart.)
Glue the cabochon into the base with a strong glue. I use e-6000.
Add a chain to your little pendant and you are good to go!
See? Super quick right?
I can think of all sorts of fun fabric combos – though I do love this light floral with the wood. Makes me think of spring.

I love this idea so much and have been trying to make my own version.. but keep getting stuck when I glue the cabochon to the pendant. Do you simply fold the fabric in a way that it lays flat? Does the fabric overlap in the back? If you have any pictures of the back of the cabochon before you glue it onto the pendant, I would be forever grateful!
