I have a fun new Easy Bias Tape Potholder tutorial for you today – this sweet new Easy “Keep Your Cool” Potholder.
One of my favorite parts about making things is being able to make them exactly the way I want them!
Which usually means vintage fabrics and some silliness.
I have been wanting to make a fold-over potholder for a while now – I like the style and there are so many fun options for bias tape and fabrics.
What really gives this pop is the vintage sheet bias tape that edges the potholder – and I had so much fun making it!
Simplicity sent me one of their fabulous Bias Tape Makers and I had a great time trying it out. Here’s a little video I posted on Instagram showing how easy it is to use!
I had fun making up a few different fabrics into bias tape. This is a one inch tip on the machine, which folds and presses the fabric into one inch Single Fold bias tape. Then all you have to do is press it in half to have double fold bias tape.
I found that the tape maker worked better with this fabric in the video than my vintage sheet fabric. The vintage sheet fabric is usually hard to press into creases for some reason. I don’t know if it’s the age of the fabric or what. It pressed it into the tape, but I went over it with the iron give it a little stronger creases.
So let’s get to the tutorial!
You’ll need:
- 1/4 yard fabric
- 50″ of bias tape
- batting
- insul-fleece
- embroidery or other fabric appliques (optional)
Begin by cutting four circles out of fabric, the size you’d like your potholder. I used a big bowl to trace – mine is just about 8 1/2 inches in diameter. Take 2 of the circles and fold them in half. Cut 1/2″ off the folded edge of the half circles. That should leave your with 2 circles and 4 half circles. Whew. Math is icky.
Use these pieces to cut 2 circles of batting, 4 half circles of batting and out of insul-fleece: one circle and 2 half circles.
Cut and prep your bias tape. I cut 2″ wide fabric strips on the bias to make my tape.
Cutting the fabric on the bias (45º angle to the selvedge) will allow your tape to be sewn easily to the curves of the potholder.
If you are not using the Bias Tape Maker, you’ll want to fold each of the long edges of the fabric strip into the center and press. Then fold the fabric strip in half again long ways. Press. Now you have custom bias tape!
For the back piece of the potholder, make a fabric sandwich with the right sides of the fabric out, and a layer of batting, insul-fleece, and batting inside.
Pin your layers together and quilt as desired. I did straight(ish) rows since I thought those would look nice with the wood grain fabric. Trim around your circle to cut off any batting that sticks out.
Repeat the quilting process with your two half circle pieces.
Add your embroidery or applique to your half circles with Wonder Under. I embroidered some fabric with the phrase “keep your cool” but you could add any appliques to yours! Or leave it plain to show off the fabulous fabric you’re using.
Applique around the fabric edges with a small zig-zag stitch to hold them in place.
Now we’re going to add the bias tape. Open out your bias tape and line up the long edge with the straight edge on the back of one of your half circles. Sew along the first fold crease, sewing the bias tape to the back of the half circle. Trim the bias tape so it is the same length as the piece.
Bring the folded side of the bias tape around to the front of the half circle and sew down, sewing right inside the folded edge of the tape.
Repeat for the other half circle.
Now we’re going to put the whole thing together. Lay the half circle pieces on top of the full circle and leave an opening in the middle. The right and left curves of the circle should match up with the half circles. Baste all the way around the pieces, sewing through all the layers, just inside the raw edge.
Starting about 3″ into your bias tape, start sewing the tape to the back of your circle like you did with the half circles. Stop sewing about 4″ from where you started. You should now have two sections of bias tape that are loose at the bottom. Line up where the bias tape would meet in the bottom center and open up the tape. Sew across the bias tape, right sides together. Trim the bias tape ends and press the seam open. Finish sewing the tape to the bottom curve of the potholder.
Bring your bias tape around to the front and sew in place on the front side, just inside the folded edge. (If your bias tape doesn’t cover the stitching, you can trim off a little of the potholder fabric, all the way around the circle.
Now you have a super cute little potholder – all custom decorated with bias tape!
Wouldn’t this be a great gift too? You could make up a ton of bias tape and just do up a stack of potholders! They’d be perfect hostess or teacher gifts!

With a little embroidery, maybe a few sequins.
