Cookie Cutter Marquee Chalkboard Art

We’re getting down to the wire here with Christmas projects aren’t we?!

But sometimes you get an idea and you just have to roll with it!!
Even if it means your house isn’t clean when your in-laws get here. Ahem.

I’ve been wanting to make a Marquee sign for ages but couldn’t come up with a plan that I was jazzed about.
That is, until I found these little “JOY” cookie cutters! They are super cute cookie cutters of course – but they make a really fun Christmas Marquee Sign too!

I knew since the letters were small they’d need to be on a wood backing of some sort. This frame ended up being perfect to show off the letters – plus give room  for a bit of chalkboard art!

You wouldn’t have to use a frame though – a piece of pallet wood or a bit of beadboard would look great too!

I am no where near a chalkboard expert – but I like the simplicity of this. Anyone could do it!

So here’s what you’ll need for your own Marquee Cookie Cutter Sign!

• Cookie Cutters for letters  (I found these at Jo-Ann Fabric Store)
• Wood backing for letters
• Frame (optional – this is a 10″ x 15″ but you’ll want one to fit your letters/cookie cutters)
• paint for frame
• light set (this is a 20 light set)
• chalkboard paint
• Tools for cutting out wood/drilling holes

Start by cutting out your wood base piece. You’ll want to have room for your cookie cutters plus a little space around for chalkboard art.
I used a piece of plywood that is smooth on one side.

Place your cookie cutters on the wood and trace the shapes with a pencil. Make sure your letters are close enough together so the light strand will reach all the holes.

Mark the locations for the light holes. Keep in mind you’ll want them spaced far enough apart so the lights aren’t super close together.
Drill the holes for the lights.

Once your holes are all drilled, paint the wood base with chalkboard paint.

Once your paint is dry, place the cookie cutters back over the holes. Trace the shapes again – on the inside of the cookie cutters.
Paint the letters with a light or contrasting color.

While this is drying, paint your frame if you need too. I painted mine red and added some little paint polka dots.

Pop the chalkboard in the frame. Glue the cookie cutters over the painted shapes.

Add some little chalkboard designs to the frame. I just browsed through Pinterest a little while looking through Chalkboard Art to get ideas. If you want you can lightly draw your designs on with a pencil, then go over them with chalk.

Last step – flip the frame over and carefully rest it on the cookie cutters. Place a light from your strand into each hole. Glue them in place if you need to.

That’s it!! A super cute and easy piece of Marquee art for Christmas!

I love the bright colors of the cookie cutters against the chalkboard backing.

The lights are super bright too! It’s a little hard to tell but they really look so bright and pretty!
