I am so excited to show this project off to you today!
This darling sampler has been on my To-Do list for.ev.er. I had purchased the pattern ages ago – it’s from the super talented Alicia Paulson. Other fun things kept getting in the way though and I sort of forgot about it. I came across it again after we moved and I just knew that I had to make it! And let me say this was soooo much fun to stitch up!
The pattern uses pretty basic stitches, and it has great instructions for them, in case you need a refresher. I decided to go with a similar gold background to the one Alicia used in her sample – I thought it was super cute and retro looking. So here’s some closeups of the letters. Don’t judge too harshly – I know some these are far from perfect but I love it anyway. :)
Aren’t they sweet letters? I love them. Now I just need to find the perfect spot to hang this!
Have you ever done a sampler? Maybe even this one? Leave a link in the comments – I’d love to see it!
I thought, “Alicia Paulson!” the minute I saw this. What an amazing designer she is!
I have done a number of samplers but nothing as truly sampler-ish as this design is. Beautiful work, Bev! Thanks for sharing.
That’s adorable, I am looking for something to make for my pregnant daughters baby’s room! I don’t understand how you get the design on the fabric once you print the design from your computer. Do you have to use tracing paper? I haven’t embroidered in years, so I am a bit behind in that area!
Hi Cheryl! To trace the design, I taped the pattern up in a window and taped my fabric over it, then traced the design with a disappearing fabric marker. I had to do this in steps since I wasn’t stitching super fast, but to fix that you could use a water soluble marker or even a light pencil. I hope that helps! :)
Thanks for sharing this beautiful sampler Bev. I have just been to her website and downloaded the file. I hope mine turns out as lovely as yours. Thankyou also for the great hoop embroidery. The bike was my favourite.
Hi Margaret! I’m so glad you’re giving the sampler a try, I think you’ll have a lot of fun with it!
So pretty! I going to add this to my list!! I’ve been doing some other embroidery projects recently and have been using a water soluble stabilizer that you can print on. Probably some piecing to do but it saves all the work of tracing, which I’m really bad about since I’m too impatient to get started.
So you print from the computer onto the stabilizer then iron on to the fabric?
No ironing, as it has a sticky back on it. After you’re finished sewing, it dissolves away in hot water. I used Sulky’s 11-Inch-Printable-Fabri-Solvy-Stabilizer and got it from Amazon. I’ve also seen some at Hobby Lobby but haven’t tried it yet.
Awesome, thank you!!
This is beautiful, I love it! I found your site on Pinterest a while back and you have really inspired me to start embroidering again. My grandma taught me some basic stitches when I was a little girl and I found, surprisingly, I still remembered some.
I love the stitches used in the C and Y! You did a fab job. I love to embroider and cross-stitch, especially Jenny Hart!
Bev, I transfer the way you do, with a disappearing ink pen and on a window, but I find it hard to copy the design even on white fabric. Did you have trouble with the darker colored fabric? One of these days I need to rig myself up a nifty light box!
I read about the light-box/window method of transfer and I found it very effective- but I didn’t use a light box OR a window! I found that taping my fabric to a large lampshade (with the lamp on of course) worked perfectly and can be used at any time of day without the hassle of buying or making a light box. Hope it helps! :)

I just discovered your blog and love everything I have seen! I have never done a project with crewel wool and was disappointed there wasn’t a kit to buy! It would look totally different with DMC floss but I might try that. Thanks for sharing your finished work-it makes me want to start this immediately!
I have LOVED seeing your updates of this projects on Instagram! All of it together is just sheer perfection. I LOVE it!!
Beautiful work, I’m thinking to do something similar for my step-grand daughter, Thank you for sharing!
Is there any chance that the yarn kit will be put together and sold again? I would love to make this with the yarn!
No I haven’t embroidered in years. Wanted to put some finishing touches on a hand made gift for my new grand daughter. Got a kit to add to one of the gifts I am making while visiting. Can’t quite get the even stitching I used to do with ease when I was in my 20’s,
0ver 30 years ago I was good at this, it’s not like riding a bike, it doesn’t just come back to ya.
Hi Bev! Did you use DMC cotton thread or crewel wool to stitch this ABC sampler? Your sampler came out beautifully!
How can I get the pattern it’s beautiful!
My sister made this for my baby girl and I LOVE it! Where did you get the frame from?
I think there would be a lot of interest if a kit was put together again! It’s such a beautiful design and embroidery is so popular right now!
