Ya’ll. I have had a ridiculously good time making up these Vintage Adventure Christmas Sweater Mug Rugs! I have been wanting to try Kid Giddy’s Ugly Christmas Sweater pattern for ages now and I just couldn’t resist making them up with a camper and bicycle from Vintage Adventure!
This was my first time doing foundation paper piecing and once I got the hang of it, I really loved it! I will confess to spending some quality time with my seam ripper in the beginning though. There’s nothing like sewing what you think is the perfect little sleeve cuff and having it face the wrong direction when you go to press it. Twice.
It all worked out in the end though! And now I kind of want these sweaters in real life so I can wear them to all the holiday things.
I followed Kerry’s pattern exactly for the sweater portion of the block, then added a 1 1/2″ border of red floral and a 1″ border of white around them. They are perfect for little mug rugs – one for Santa and one for me! They don’t take much fabric – if you have a fat quarter bundle or layer cake of Vintage Adventure you could easily make up a bunch of them. Here’s what prints I used for each – in case you want to make up them up with these same looks!
Camper Sweater –
- Body – Aqua Camper Print
- Sleeves – Pink Bicycle Print
- Cuffs and Neck – Red Stripe
- Border – Red Floral
- Binding – Aqua Stripe – cut on the bias
- Background – Riley White Solid
Bicycle Sweater –
- Body – Pink Bicycle Print
- Sleeves – Aqua Bicycle Print
- Cuffs and Neck – Red Stripe
- Border – Red Floral
- Binding – Pink Stripe – cut on the bias
- Background – Riley White Solid
I cut my mini quilt and mug rug bindings at 2 1/4″ – it makes for just a little smaller binding and works perfectly for these smaller quilt sizes.
