I have a couple of fun recipes for you that I love to use all year, but especially during these dry winter months – they are Tropical Sugar Scrubs!
I don’t know about you but this time of year my skin gets DRY.
Like – elephant dry. Sahara desert dry.
Even though we’re right on the coast – this winter weather definitely takes it’s toll!
So I am always looking for ways to make my skin a little smoother and softer.
These Sugar Scrubs are just the thing!
They are made with Tropical Teas that names like Coconut Rum and Mango Margarita. Fun flavors but no alcohol of course. ;)
These little guys are perfect to make for your self, but they make up a batch so you could do a spa night, or make some up as gifts! Keep in mind – mother’s day is just around the corner!
I have a printable to make gift giving even easier for you! You can download and print out the labels here! Sugar Scrub Labels
Ready for a recipe? They are super quick to put together. We’ll start with the Coconut Rum version first!
Recipe:
- 2 cups white sugar
- 1 cup coconut oil (may need to soften in the microwave just a bit)
- 6 Coconut Rum teabags
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 teaspoon honey
- 1/2 cup brown sugar (optional)
The teas I used are made by a company called Zhena’s Gypsy Tea. I’ve found these at World Market and my grocery store. (These teas are super yummy for iced tea too!) But if you can’t find these – you can really mix in any tropical tea flavor. It’s going to go great with the Coconut Oil!
Add your sugar to a large mixing bowl. Open up your tea bags and add to the sugar.
If your coconut oil is kind of solid, you can melt it in the microwave just a bit. Twenty or thirty seconds should soften it up enough.
Add your coconut oil to the sugar mixture, stir to combine. Mix in the vanilla and honey.
Now if you like your scrubs kind of on the oily side, you can stop there. But I like to mix in a 1/2 cup of brown sugar. It cuts down on the oil just a bit, and it adds a great smell!
Once you have everything mixed together (see? Super fast) then you can add it to your jars. I found these at World Market. They’re about 4 1/2 inches tall – and this amount of scrub filled three of them. Print out your label and tie it on – instant cuteness!
Here’s the recipe for the Mango Margarita Scrub –
- 1 Cups White Sugar
- 1 Cup Brown Sugar
- 1/2 Cup Olive Oil (or more if desired)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 teaspoon honey
- 1 teaspoon lemon essential oil
- 6 Mango Margarita tea bags
Start by mixing together your sugars.
Open up your tea bags and add them to the sugar mixture.
Add in your olive oil – you can add more or less depending on the consistency of the scrub you like. Just add a little bit at a time and go from there.
Mix in your honey, vanilla, and the lemon essential oil. You can find both this and the coconut oil at vitamin stores – or maybe even your local drugstore.
Mix together well and add to your jars.
Aren’t they fun?
I hope you’ll give them a try – they are so perfect for softening up your skin!

How do you keep your coconut oil from turning back into a solid. I’ve made some scrubs with coconut oil in the past and had to microwave them before each use because the oil returned to solid form. What’s your secret?
thank you so much for your amazing ideas and tutorials….I love every one of them and look for them in my mail each day = )

My skin is so dry too! I’ve never tried homemade scrubs, but I am now. Thanks for the idea!!
Just stopping by to invite you to a new link party I’m starting. It is for OLD posts–and you have so many wonderful old posts that I often look through. Please come over and share the best of the best. Just because its not new doesn’t mean it doesn’t desire to be pinned again!

I love making sugar scrubs! Such a classic gift to give and of course use for yourself! Love our “flavor” combinations.
These both sound heavenly! Thanks so much for sharing.
Both of these scrubs sound divine! My mom and aunts would love them. I’m going to have to whip up a batch!!
Those are so pretty!! I love the way you have them packaged. They’d be a lovely treat to try out on dry skin this winter!
For those of us who do not know, how do you use the scrub? Also in the one with olive oil, you have 1/2 olive oil but is it 1/2 cup, 1/2 tsp or what? Thank you.
LOL! Thanks for catching that Bonnie – goodness that makes a difference. It’s 1/2 Cup – or more if desired. I don’t like my scrubs super oily.
So for use – I love them for my hands especially this time of year – I use it just like soap – put some of the scrub on my hands and then scrub it in – then rinse really well. It should leave your hands feeling smooth and soft! You can use it in other ways too – it’s great for feet or in the shower as a body scrub!
