I have been going a little nuts (ha) lately over the fact that we have an oak tree in the backyard now. With actual acorns. I’m like a squirrel with the collecting.
Having lived only in the west this is a whole new world! (sing that to the Aladdin tune please) I have always looked at all the cute Fall crafts using acorns, and just couldn’t bring myself to buy them. Well no more! I have painted up some to use for my Thanksgiving mantel and I have another fun Acorn project today! This Sweet Woodland Acorn Necklace is so easy to make and you don’t even need a whole acorn – just the top!
I’ve paired the top of an acorn – glammed up a bit – with a glass globe filled with a sweet woodland scene. I think it will be fun little bit of Fall to wear!
Here’s what you’ll need!
- Glass Necklace Globe set – I bought mine on etsy but I think you can find them at regular craft stores now too.
Your kit will need a glass globe, a bail, and necklace chain – or you can buy the pieces individually. - Acorn top – that fits over the top of the globe
- decoupage
- brush
- gold paint
- moss, tiny mushroom, deer charm – whatever you want!
- E-6000 glue
Start by brushing the acorn top with decoupage – cover the entire top and bottom. This will kind of smooth it out a bit and seal it.
Paint the top of the acorn with gold. I used this gold leafing pen and it was super easy but any gold paint should work great.
Now you can gather up your charms. I used a tiny resin mushroom (from etsy) and a little deer charm (hobby lobby).
Glue a bit of soft moss into the base of the glass globe. Press it in place with a little tool or toothpick. I highly recommend not using your finger to hold it in place for a while – because you {might} end up with a finger dyed light green from moss and glue. Just sayin.
Glue each charm piece in place. you will want to hold them in place for a while – the moss is springy and the charms will need some time in place or they’ll tip.
While the inside is drying, glue a small bail to the top of the acorn.
Run a line of glue inside the acorn top along the edge and place the top on the glass globe. Hold in place until glue sets up.
Add your chain to the bail and show off your cute new necklace! Make sure you wait at least 24 hours for the glue to completely dry.
I just love how the gold top looks with the little deer and mushroom!!

This may be the CUTEST thing I have ever seen. It’s positively adorable! GENIUS to use a real acorn top!!!!
Sharon Gullikson says
I don’t know what a bail is, or how to attach it. I looked and looked to see where you mentioned it, but couldn’t find it. I HAVE to make this–it’s adorable!!! Thanks!
Beverly says
Hi Sharon!
The bail is the little cap on the top of the acorn with the ring attached – so you can attach the chain. They come in all different styles, but you want something that will be easy to glue to the top of the acorn. :) Let me know if you have any other questions!
Rennie says
I have the hardest time finding the glass globes. What size do you recommend?
Beverly says
Hi Rennie! The globe I used is 30mm in diameter, with a 20mm diameter base opening. I ordered mine from here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/KaysvilleCraftSupply?ref=l2-shopheader-name and it came as a set.

It’s super cute, Bev!! I can imagine putting lots of different (and random) things, and you know me that I love collecting little things…!
I’ve been away from blogging (and a world of internet) for a quite long time, but it’s such a joy to come back and find such sweet thing. Yay for quality crafts :)

This would also work as tree ornaments. They could be customized for each child/adult.

Hi Bev,
Hope you are staying warm. In Maine we now have Snow and it’s very cold. But looking outside it’s beautiful. Ohhh I see a deer right now!!!
Anyway, I am going to make this necklace for Christmas and then setup the dinner table and wap each necklace in a small gift box and put it on each plate. What a good idea!
Linda A Macdonald says
How do I sent picture on this message so you can all see my Christmas dinner table from last year so you all can get some idea.
