We are in the process around here of getting my daughter ready to move into her dorm room. (wait. what?) In denial of the fact that she won’t be living with us all the time starting next month – I’m throwing myself into a frenzy of making all the things.
We’re going for a nautical theme in the room in fun, bright colors. So fun. It was perfect timing when Caroline of Sew Caroline asked if I would be a part of the tour for her new fabric line – Gleeful Fabrics. Um – hello adorable fabric. I thought an anchor pillow would be a fun way to show off the fabrics – and fit in great with Becka’s room!
This was super easy to make up too. It looks all complicated with the patchwork but it goes together really quickly.
Aren’t those little swirls just the cutest? I want to make up a sundress in this yellow fabric. It’s so fun.
So let’s get started!
You’ll need:
- 2 fat quarters (or 18″ x 18″ pieces) for front and back
- small pieces for anchor
- embroidery floss
- Fusible webbing
- fusible fleece
- 18″ pillow form
Begin by printing out or drawing your anchor shape. (You could really do this with any shape.) I drew out the anchor, then marked little lines in where I wanted the fabrics to change.
Cut out the pattern, then the fabrics. Where the pieces in the middle overlap, cut one side a little longer so the pieces will overlap. This will make it easier to sew together.
Flip the pieces over and arrange them so everything lays out correctly. Iron a piece of fusible webbing (the shape of the anchor) to the wrong side of the fabric. Peel off the paper backing and iron the anchor to the pillow front fabric.
Set your machine to a small zig zag stitch. Stitch over the seams where the fabrics overlap first, then stitch all the way around the anchor.
Cut a piece of fusible fleece 18″ x 18″ and iron it to the wrong side of the pillow front. With a length of coordinating embroidery floss, sew a running stitch all the way around the anchor. This will set it off a bit. Plus it just looks cute.
Sew your pillow front and back pieces together, leaving an opening at the bottom for turning. (I never leave a big enough opening. I do it every. time.)
Turn your fabrics right side out and press. Pop your pillow form in and sew up the opening. And you are done! See? So easy.
I just love the playful prints in this line.
