It’s no secret that I’m a bit of a Harry Potter fan (my family would say more than a bit) so I’m super excited to show off my newest Harry Potter inspired hoop! Every year I participate in Marissa from Rae Gun Ramblings Happy Harry Potter series – a fabulous series full of projects, recipes, and so many cute ideas! This year I created a Luna Lovegood Embroidery Hoop Art – and I love how it turned out!
Luna’s one of my favorite HP characters. She’s smart, she’s loyal, she’s super quirky – what’s not to love? This hoop art shows off her famous spectrespecs, along with one of her best quotes!
I had a lot of fun with this one! I used the DMC Light Effects threads – they’re super sparkly and I thought they worked out great for adding some fun sparkle to the hoop. Perfect for Luna’s style don’t you think?
Here’s what you need to make your own!
- 10″ square of light cotton fabric
- 4″ x 8″ piece of fabric for spectrespecs
- 4″ x 8″ piece of fusible webbing
- DMC Floss – 317
- DMC Light Effects Jewel Set
- 8″ Embroidery Hoop
- Transfer pen or other tracing method
- Luna Lovegood Embroidery Pattern
Begin by printing out your pattern. Transfer the design onto the fabric. For this hoop I used a fine point transfer pen. These are great because they make a super fine line and are super easy to use. They are permanent so you can’t remove the line, but it’s such a fine line that you can stitch over it completely. For these pens, you will trace the design onto the reverse side of the pattern.
I use the pens from Sublime Stitching – they work great! Once your design is traced, flip it over and iron the transfer onto your fabric. You can also use these transfers more than once! I traced all the letters and stars, then did some small placement lines inside where the spectrespecs will go.
Cut our the spectrespecs from the pattern. Iron the fusible webbing onto the wrong side of the fabric, then cut out the glasses shape. Fuse the spectrespecs in place on your fabric, then add the fabric to your hoop.
The DMC Light Effects come in a little box in different color sets. I used the Jewel set for this hoop.
Stitch all the lettering with a back stitch using three strands of the gray floss. Next, stitch the stars with three strands of the variegated light effects. Stitch the inside of lenses using one strand of the purple for the left lens and blue for the right. Start at the outside and stitch to the center, all the way around, so they look sort of like spokes. Outline the spectrespecs with two strands of the pink floss and a chain stitch.
That’s all your stitching!
Finish the back of your embroidery hoop. Here’s a tutorial if you need one.
So cute right?! It would be such a fun gift for a Harry Potter fan, or a cute decoration for your bookshelf or library!
Make sure you head over and check out all the other projects from this year too!

What an amazing hoop art! I am a huuuuge Harry Potter fan myself (a Potterhead as they say :P) and I am completely in love with this hoop. You really made my day with this gorgeous post, thank you so much! I have been struggling with lots of difficult things lately and Harry Potter and craft has always helped me to stay happy and content. This quote by Luna just put everything in perspective again. Thanks for reminding me that it’s beautiful to be different. :-)
I have never done embroidery before (I am a crocheter and sewer myself) but this I definitely want to try! Thank you so much for the inspiration! And of course, I am going to enter the giveaway, I never win anything but a girl can dream of course! :-)
I love your blog, thanks for the great posts!
