I pretty much adore playing with new fabrics. I mean, don’t we all?? :) There is something just so delicious about getting a new bundle of coordinating fabrics and thinking of all the amazing things you can do with it! Especially when that group of fabrics is something brand new and lots of fun. :)
So when Caroline from Sew Caroline asked if I wanted to make something with her new fabric line Happy Home – of course I said yes! It totally helped that I am completely in love with this line. It’s all made up of sketched houses and hearts, bright colors and really fun designs. It really is just a sweet, happy fabric line.
One of my other favorite things to do (besides playing with new fabrics) is to come up with projects and embroidery that coordinates with the fabric. I was trying to come up with something that would tie in with this darling house fabric and I thought that a Home Sweet Home Pillow would be just perfect!
I made a striped front for my pillow and added this cute embroidery to it – I think it looks really sweet with the house fabric don’t you?
It was a really easy pillow to put together – here’s a quick tutorial!
Materials:
- Fabric from Happy Home –
- 1 Fat Quarter of Block Party
- 1 Fat Quarter of Grass in Sunlight
- 1 Fat Quarter of Window View Desert
- 1 Fat Quarter of Forget Me Not Romance
- 1/2 yard of Where the Heart is Red
- 18″ pillow form
- Navy embroidery thread/needle/embroidery hoop
- Marking Pen
- 2 yards white pom pom trim
- Home Sweet Home pattern
For the front, I wanted the top and bottom strips to be the house print – so those are cut at 5 5/8″ x 18″. The remaining three strips are 3 1/4″ x 18″.
Sew the strips together with a 1/2″ seam allowance and press the seams towards the darker fabrics. The colors in the photo below are a little dark – the next photo shows them a little more accurately.
Trace the lettering from the pattern onto the middle three strips. Place the fabric in an embroidery hoop and embroidery the words. I used a chain stitch for the two “homes” and a back stitch for “sweet”, but you can use whatever stitches you like best. Anything would look great.
Press the fabric once you’re all done.
Sew the pom pom trim to the front of the pillow so the poms point in towards the center, 1/2″ from the edge. Cut two pieces of fabric for the back, one that is 18″ x 12″ and one that is 18″ x 10″. Hem the bottom of the 18″ x 12″ piece and the top of the 18″ x 10″ piece.
Place the two pieces on top of each other so the 18″ x 12″ piece is over the smaller piece and it is the same height as the pillow front panel. Baste the sides together where they overlap. Place the front and back of the pillow right sides together and sew around all four sides. Trim the corners, turn right side out and press.
Place the pillow in the cover, the back pieces will overlap to cover the back side of the pillow.
So fun right?!
I think it will be so cute on my sofa!
