Four Corners Feathers Table Runner

I have another new fun fabric line to show off to you!

The amazing girls from Simple Simon and Co. have just debuted their first fabric line – Four Corners by Riley Blake!

This is such a fun line! It’s made up of really great black and white prints, all mixed in with some great pops of turquoise, coral and gold. I love how they look together.

I thought the line would be great paired with my Feather pattern from my Pretty Feathers Dishtowel so I came up with this easy Four Corners Feathers Table Runner.

The front is a simple design highlighting a few of the fabrics in the feather pattern, and the back is pieced with strips of the different fabrics. I love how the pieced binding looks against the white and black polkadot front fabric too.

I quilted it with a swirly pattern that kind of mimics some of the circle prints – though I’m still getting my groove with free motion quilting so let’s not examine that too closely hmmm?

I think it looks great with my Fall displays too!

Here’s the tutorial:

Materials:

• Four Corners fat quarter bundle
• 1/3 yard of light fabric for front piece
• embroidery stabilizer
• 11″ x 42″ piece of light batting
• Fusible Webbing
• Feather Pattern

Choose 8 fabrics for your feathers. Cut out the fabric a little larger than your feather shape. Iron your fusible webbing to the back side of the fabric. Cut out the feathers.

Cut your front fabric piece 11″ x 42″. Remove the paper backing from the feathers. Measure the center of the front fabric and mark. Place a feather on each side of the center line, 1″ away from the line. Measure out from each feather 2″ and place the next feathers, until all 8 are in place. Double check the tops and bottoms to ensure they are centered and that the end feathers are the same distance from each end of the front fabric piece. Fuse the feathers in place.

Place embroidery stabilizer under the front panel piece and zig zag around each of the feathers. Trim the stabilizer around each feather.

Now we’re going to piece together the back. You can do this any way you’d like, or you can use a solid piece of fabric if you prefer. I chose a center piece from one of the larger prints and cut a piece 11″ x 18″. I then cut from 6 different fabrics 2 strips of 3″ x 11″. So 12 strips total.

Sew 6 strips on each side of the center piece with a 1/2″ seam allowance.

Make a quilty sandwich by placing your back fabric wrong side up, then a layer of batting, then your top fabric right side up.  Pin your fabrics together. Quilt the pieces together. I used a 1/2″ outline stitch around each of the feathers, then did the swirls everywhere else. You could do stripes or even just outline the feathers – since this is a runner you don’t have to worry too much about the quilting.

For the binding, cut 3″ x 24″ pieces from 5 of the fabrics. Sew the strips together with a diagonal seam, then press the strip in half long ways.

Sew the binding to the back side of the runner all the way around with a 1/2″ seam allowance, then fold the binding to the front. Machine or hand stitch the binding to the front. And you’re all done!

It was fun to do a quilting project again, even if it was little. I can’t wait to work on something larger soon!
