Last month I shared the pattern for my Star Lily Hexagon as part of a fun Crochet-a-long I did with some friends.
I’ve been wanting to try the hexagon in my favorite cotton yarn so I pulled everything out and got to crocheting and then had the fun idea to turn the hexagons into potholders! I’ve been saving up vintage potholder patterns to try and I like that this pattern feels a bit retro like those.
I took the basic hexagon pattern and added a few rows – and some scallops of course. Because if anything crochet sits still long enough I tend to add scallops to it. Everything is cuter with scallops. :)
Here are the instructions to turn the Star Lily hexagon into a potholder:
Create the hexagon according to the instructions here but don’t finish off when you’ve reached the last row.
Round 6:
Change colors.
Chain 2, Double Crochet in next three stitches. *In chain 1 space at corner, 2 double crochets, chain 1, 2 double crochets, double crochet in each stitch across (7 double crochets). Repeat from * three more times. In chain 1 space at corner crochet 2 double crochets, chain 1, 2 double crochets. Crochet 4 Double crochets in stitches across to starting point. Slip stitch with beginning chain 2.
Round 7:
Change colors.
Chain 1. Single crochet in each stitch across double crochets up to chain 1 space. * Single crochet, chain 1, single crochet in chain 1 space. Single crochet in each double crochet across to next chain 1 space. (10 single crochets). Repeat from * 3 more times. Single crochet, chain 1, single crochet in chain 1 space. Single crochet across double crochet stitches to starting point. Slip stitch to beginning chain 1.
Round 8:
Slip stitch across two more single crochets. Skip one single crochet. In next single crochet, crochet 5 double crochets. Skip next single crochet. Slip stitch in chain 1 space at corner. {Skip one single crochet. Crochet 5 double crochets in next single crochet. Skip 1 single crochet and slip stitch in next single crochet.} 1 Scallop made. Crochet two more scallops.
Slip stitch in chain 1 space at corner. Chain 9 and slip stitch in first chain to form a loop. Slip stitch in chain 1 space.
*Crochet 3 scallops across side of hexagon. Slip stitch in corner chain 1 space. Repeat for 2 more sides. Crochet 2 more scallops in remaining section on last side. Slip stitch in beginning stitch. Finish off.
Weave in all ends.
Now you have a super cute new potholder!
Notes: This is not a potholder you use to pull things out of the oven – because of, you know, the holes. :) Use it for pretty teapots and bowls, that sort of thing. Also, I recommend cotton yarn for potholders – acrylic yarns tend to melt a little with heat.
I’d love to see any potholders you make with the pattern!
Thanks for sharing your crochet talent and this potholder pattern! Great idea for a holiday gift:)
