I’ve been having so much fun setting up our new house, decorating, arranging furniture – and just in general getting all settled in. It’s been years since we have owned our own house and I can’t tell you how much fun it is putting just as many nails I want in my own walls.
I’ve been so focused on the big stuff – getting everything in its place and hanging things on the wall. And while that’s been really fun, it was so nice to sit down last week and make something cute and little! These colorful framed fabric coasters are so sweet and they were so fast to make!
I used some little decorative frames from Michaels and backed them with vintage fabric and wool felt, all in different prints and colors. I love the way the felt shows through the cut outs in the frames.
These are super easy to make up – here’s what you’ll need:
- 4 wooden mini frames
- Paint for frames
- four fabrics for inserts
- small pieces of batting
- wool felt for backing
- Elmer’s CraftBond(R) Less Mess Hot Glue Sticks
- Elmer’s Enhanced Safety, High Temp Mini Glue Gun
- Available now in select Michaels stores. These are brand new. Yay!
Begin by painting your wood frames. You only need to paint the front and sides. You probably need a tiny brush to get in all the little openings.
Measure the opening of the frames and cut four pieces of fabric just a little larger than the opening.
Did you know Elmer’s makes a hot glue gun? I didn’t! They kindly sent me one and I tried it out on this project.
Glue the fabric to the back of the frame. Don’t worry about the paint showing through, we’ll cover that up in a bit.
Place a small square of batting in the center of the fabric.
Trace the outer edge of the frame. Cut out a piece of felt a little smaller than the frame edge. Glue it in place around the edge of the frame.
Now you’ve got one coaster done!
Repeat for three more – or as many as you’d like to make!
They make such a fun little splash of color on the table! They would be great gifts too!
I hope you make up some – and if you do I’d love to see a photo!

These would even look cute with pictures in them as fridge magnets. I love the solid wool behind the edging, it makes it stand out so much more!

Thank you so much Anne!! You are the best!

I love them but I don’t know that I would use them as coasters as the first coffee or tea stain on the material is gonna make for a sad coaster. I love the idea of a fridge magnet or even hanging them in a little group on a wall. They are adorable and so easy.

These are so cute.

These are so adorable, Bev! In fact, they are so adorable that I would hang a group of three or four of them on a wall. How sweet they’d look with nursery-themed fabric in a baby’s room! Five-inch charm packs would work quite nicely for any theme, sparing the expense of buying yardage for each fabric.
Thank you for sharing your versatile idea! xoxo
P.S. Congratulations on your new house!

Cute! I think I would make some and hang them on a wall.

I have only seen them at Michael’s.i would look at their site online if you don’t have a store close by. Have you tried Amazon? I swear if something is not at Amazon, it does not exist! Good luck.

Would you mind sharing with us where you found that fabric?
Beverly says
Hi Jenny,
They are all vintage fabrics – cut from vintage sheets! :) My favorite fabrics to work with. You can find them often on Etsy, even in little fat quarters or charm squares. Hope that helps!
