Have you looked at the dishtowels at Anthropologie? They’re fairly yummy. Sweet little birds and flowers embroidered on cute patterned dishtowels, all for the low low prices of $18 – $24. hmmm. maybe not. So . . what to do? Make my own! :)
What do you think? I looove it.
I went searching for a cute design to embroider and came across Urban Threads. If you haven’t already checked them out – spend some time looking around their site. They have got some great, fun, quirky stuff for VERY low prices. Seriously. This pattern, for the large size, was $1.00. Thank you very much. I have a bunch of stuff saved as favorites, future projects to come.
Here’s a closeup of the embroidery –
The dishtowel came in a four-pack that I got on clearance (at the grocery store of all places) this winter. Four different colored dishtowels for $1.99. I’m kicking myself for not buying more. The fabrics I had in my stash. They’re Lila Tuellar fabrics, she designs for Moda. She’s got great fabrics and cute patterns too. And the embroidery is on a piece of linen I had. I frayed the edges of the linen and the fabric behind it – just to give it a little rustic-ness (is that a word?).
So my grand total, if I don’t count stash fabric (and who does) is $1.50. Is that awesome or what???
Now I have to decide if I’ll actually dry my hands on it. . . maybe it will be a “company” towel. haha.

This is so stinkin’ cute! Love the idea and your embroidery is just perfect, plus the fabric and the ruffle. Clever and well done! My kitchen is red and black, I will HAVE to make some of these soon.
I really like the fabrics that you chose. They really make it work with the red. Very nice!
Very cute indeed! I will go over and check them out! You should love this. I do!

I hadn’t heard of Urban Threads before. I do a lot of hand embroidery work. I went over and looked around; that was fun!
Oh my, lovin’ your dishtowel Bev! That embroidery is so fabulous. Oh I wish I knew how to sew. Have you thought of making and selling these? They would do great.
Blessings,
Marie
What a great job. The embroidery is beautiful! Thanks for sharing at ‘Look at me, I’m SO Crafty!’ at Fun to Craft.
Hi! I love this towel! Your choice of fabrics and colors is wonderful!
Did you do anything special to the frayed edges to prevent them from fraying any further toward the stitching?
Thank you for the great ideas!
Hi Bev: Love this tea towel! Have already made 4 pairs of your retro towels, as Christmas gifts!
Went onto the Urban Threads site. Cute stuff.
However, now I know what ‘inflation’ means. The large ‘bon appetit’ design is now $7.00!
Thx for your ‘craftiness’!
Oh wow – $7.00!! That’s quite an increase! :) I’m so glad you love the towel – it’s always been one of my favorites!
I know this reply is very, very late, but I am a longtime fan of Urban Threads and wanted you, and anyone else who might make the same mistake, to know that the $7 price was for the machine embroidery version of the 6×10 size. The hand embroidery designs at Urban Threads are $1 and, occasionally, on sale for 50 cents. You don’t want to buy the machine versions unless you have an embroidery machine. There is a drop down box at the top of the page where you can choose between hand and machine embroidery.
Take Care
I just found your dishtowel on pinterest. Very cute! Great minds MUST think alike… I too am not paying the price for dishtowels. LOL You can see my Bon Appetite dish towel here: http://flyawayhome-4am.blogspot.com/2014/07/a-little-of-this.html
