I’m so excited to show off my Star of Wonder Sew Along Finish! This has been such a fun quilt to make!
For the last four weeks, we’ve been sewing up parts of the Star of Wonder quilt from Fat Quarter Shop. This is a free sew-along pattern, and there is a darling matching cross-stitch pattern, too! We’re showing off our final versions of the quilts this week and I added two fun bonus borders to mine.
The Fat Quarter Shop pattern ends at the first background border, just outside the pieced low-volume print border. I wanted to make my quilt a little bit bigger so I added two borders – a print border with a cute detail corner and another background border. I love how they frame the quilt.
For the sew along, I made my quilt with the Merry Little Christmas collection and my Barn Red Dainty Daisy low-volume basic as the background. I used the cheater print from the collection as the backing for the quilt- it’s so colorful and it makes the back almost as cute as the front! I used the Multi-Check print as the binding and cut it on the bias for a sweet angled check binding.
If you’d like to add this border to your version of the Star of Wonder quilt, you’ll need 1 yard for a print border and 1 additional yard of your background print.
My finished quilt is 64″ x 64″.
Instructions:
- From the print fabric, cut 6 strips, 4 1/2″ x Width of Fabric. Cut four pieces 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″. Sew the remaining strips together end to end and cut into four strips 4 1/2″ x 48 1/2″.
2. From the background fabric, cut 7 strips 4 1/2″ x Width of Fabric. Cut 8 pieces 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″. Sew the remaining strips together end to end and cut into 2 strips 4 1/2″ x 56 1/2″ and 2 strips 4 1/2″ x 64 1/2″.
3. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of the eight 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ background pieces. Place one on each end of the 4 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ strips, with the lines aligned as shown. Sew on the marked line, trim 1/4″ away from the seam and press. Repeat four all four print strips.
4. Sew a print 4 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ on each end of two of the strips as shown.
5. Sew a strip without the end block on the left and right sides of the quilt, with the background pieces aligned as shown.
6. Sew the strips with the end blocks to the top and bottom sides of the quilt, with the background pieces aligned as shown. At this point, the quilt top measures 56 1/2″ x 56 1/2″.
7. Sew the 4 1/2″ x 56 1/2″ background strips to the left and right sides of the quilt. Sew the 4 1/2″ x 64 1/2″ strips to the top and bottom sides of the quilt.
8. Quilt together quilt top, batting and backing and trim quilt top to 64″ x 64″. Bind quilt as desired.

I love how it turned out, I’d say its pretty glorious! The borders and corners add so much. Now I’ll get to working on mine. I happen to have the same fabric line as you because I didn’t want to put a lot of pink in my quilt. But I couldn’t figure out how to put the colors together until I could see the final pattern. Also I have enough fabric to make four of these and put them together for a rather large quilt, so I wanted to get it right. Hmmm I’m going to need some sashing, maybe with fussy cut cornerstones . . . . Thank you Bev for helping me get ideas!

I was thinking I would like to enlarge this quilt a bit and your border add on is perfect. Thanks for sharing.
