Thanks to Knit Picks for providing the yarn for today’s post!
So today I have something fun for you!
Today I am sharing a pattern as part of my very first Crochet a Long! (CAL – to those who actually know about these things – it is new to me!). It’s my first time – I have done some crochet pattern making before but never a hexagon! I had so much fun putting this one together though.
So the deal with a CAL is that there are 8 different fab bloggers sharing 8 different hexagon patterns over the next two weeks. One per day. Then at the end of those two weeks, we will be sharing projects you can make using the hexagons!
The hexagons are all the same size, made with worsted yarn, so you can mix or match them for the different projects, or even do multiple hexagons in the projects!
My hexagon is the Star Lily Hexagon. Isn’t that fun? I think it looks like a little flower!
Here’s how to crochet it:
Supplies:
6.0mm crochet hook
3 Colors of Worsted Weight Yarn – KnitPicks Brava – I used Solstice, Dove Heather, and Seashell
Special Stitches:
Triple Crochet Bobble – TCB – In one stitch do a Triple Crochet but don’t pull the yarn through the last two stitches on the hook. Repeat with two more TC stitches in the same stitch. YO and pull through all four loops on the hook.
Abbreviations:
TC – Triple Crochet
HTC – Half Triple Crochet
DC – Double Crochet
HDC – Half Double Crochet
SC – Single Crochet
SL ST – Slip Stitch.
CH – Chain
Ch 4. Sl st in beginning chain to form a loop.
Round 1: Chain two, dc in loop, 10 more double crochets in loop = 12 DC around. Join with slip stitch to first DC.
Change colors
Round 2: Chain 3. Crochet 2 TR in that same stitch, except for last loop of the triple. Finish by drawing through all four loops. Triple Bobble made. If your bobble is pointing to the back just push it to the front with your finger.
*SC in next stitch, Chain 5, Slip Stitch in same stitch as SC. Triple Bobble in next stitch, Repeat from * around loop. Connect with slip stitch to first bobble.
6 Triple Bobbles and 6 Chain Loops made.
Round 3: Skip first bobble, SC in first Ch5 Loop. Working in same loop, crochet 1HDC, 1 DC, 1 HTC, 1 TC, 1 HTC, 1 DC, 1 HDC, 1 SC.
*Skip next bobble. Work SC, HDC, DC, HTC, TC, HTC, DC, HDC, SC in chain 5 loop. Repeat from * around. Slip Stitch in first Ch 5 Loop. 6 Flower Petals made.
Change Colors
Round 4: Chain 3. Triple Crochet in first petal stitch. Working across petal stitches, DC, HDC, SC, Chain 1, in next stitch SC, HDC, DC *TC except leave the last loop on the hook. TC in space between petals, except for last loop. TC in next petal stitch. Pull through all 4 loops on hook.
Working across petal, crochet DC, HDC, SC, Ch 1, SC, HDC, DC* repeat between ** four more times.
Crochet TC except for last loop, slip stitch with beginning stitch, pulling through all loops on the hoop.
Change colors.
Round 5: Chain 1. SC in next 3 stitches. In Ch 1 space, *DC Ch1 DC. SC in next 6 chains. Repeat four more times. In Ch1 space, DC CH1 DC, SC in next 2 chains. Slip Stitch to beginning SC and finish off.
Weave in all ends.
The whole thing goes together pretty quickly! And the color changes are fun, they make the flower stand out. But you could totally do the whole hexagon in one color and it would look great that way too!
You’ll want to check out all the other patterns over the next two weeks – we’ll be adding them to the links here as each person posts!

Just what I need … another crochet-along :) I love the look of this hexie. It’s beautiful! My daughter just painted her room in gray and coral. I bet she’d love an afghan done in this. Thanks for sharing :)
Jennie @ Little Girl Designs says
What a great idea! I love your color combinations. I haven’t entered into the world of crocheting (okay, I’ve made a little chain stitch and some ‘shells’ for the edges of knitting projects but that’s it!). These are so pretty I think I’m going to have to be brave and try! :) Looking forward to what all of you will be sharing…

LOVE this Star Lily crochet hexagon design, especially in the trip of colors selected in your sample! I plan to use this pattern for coasters to gift to a couple relatives in sets of 8. I added to my list of projects for summertime. I’ll use cotton worsted or sport weight yarn. Thanks! Sarah in Minneapolis

Love the colors. I am definitely going to do your (cal). I like hexagons. I can’t wait to see all the different types and patterns. Thank-you for sharing your time and talent.
Anita Jensen says
I really don’t get your pattern at all.Can you post some round by round photos. Your round 2 is incomprehensible.
Beverly says
Sorry you’re having trouble Anita. I will try and get some photos up in the next few days. If you have a specific question I’d be happy to help out though. Feel free to email me at [email protected].
Serafina says
Looks like round 2 is made with Triple Crochet Bobble which she explains how it’s done before you start the project Anita . Hope that helps :)
Beautiful pattern Beverly . I love Brava yarn and crochet with it all the time! I love KnitPicks yarn!
Beverly says
Just following up Anita, I’m glad we were able to get it corrected and worked out! :) Thanks for your feedback.

Thank you for this lovely pattern! I have a question:
In the first section of round 3, in the sequence of sts worked in the 1st chain loop, is that meant to be an htc before the last sc, or is it an hdc?
Many thanks!
Beverly says
Thanks for catching that Gillian – it is supposed to be an hdc. :) I’ve corrected the post.
Mearla V says
Absolutely gorgeous! I want to start making them immediately!
Mary Frye says
My daughter wants an afghan done out of these. Hope you will be giving instructions for that at the end! The hexagon is really beautiful in these colors.

A friend posted this to my facebook today – love the star/snowflake/flower look of this motif. Have saved it in my “later on” file, have in mind to crochet a “footy blanket” – works well for 3 colours, and would be unlike all those “granny squares” blankets you see at the footy. :) Not sure how to post a pic to you when it’s done?
Sue Rowland says
Oh, and just checking: since you use the term “single crochet”, may I assume you’re in USA and it’s a USA-written pattern? Just so I can convert it to “Australian” when I work it…. your SC = our DC, your DC = our Treble, I’m also assuming your “Triple Crochet” would be equivalent to our Double-Treble? Sigh, the world may be a smaller place these days, but each corner of it has it’s own quirks! :)
Beverly says
Hi Sue,
Yes, thanks for asking! I am in the US so that is correct. I’m not exactly sure on the equivalents but that sounds right! Thanks so much. And I would LOVE to see your blanket when you finish. Maybe you could upload a photo to my Facebook page? That would be great! (http://facebook.com/flamingotoes) Thanks a bunch!
Michele @ The Scrap Shoppe says
Bev, those are SO pretty!!! And I love the colors. I really must learn to crochet.
Dianne says
I love this idea. Where can I get the instructions for the other patterns?
Jenny Blackney says
I just love the way these colours come together and I especially love this hexagon design. Hm, think I might just have to give this one a go.

Hi I have a question on round 2 : Crochet 2 TR what is TR? I don’t see it in the Abbreviations – I really like this hexi the colors are great! Thank you in advance for any help I get.
tammy mcdaniel says
exactly how are you get from end of row to to the chain five spot. you don’t mention any chain stiches or slip stiches to get there. Would really love to finish this step to move on to next. Thanks for your help.
Nicole Sender says
Such cute hexies!
Gale says
did you ever make a photo step by step of this pattern? it looks lovely but I can’t follow the written stitches. I live in Australia and have had to convert.
Love your work,
Gale
Brenda Hoppe says
Hello. I really like your lily flower. Gonna make my grand daughter a throw Afghan. Best. Her name is Lily.
Jillian Pollard says
How many of these hexagons do you suggest for the pattern? Thanks!
Anna says
Similar to Anita from a few years ago, Im struggling with step two as well. It says right after the chain 3 to “Crochet 2 TR in that same stitch”. Is the TR supposed to be the TCB? or basic triple crochet?
