Can you hear that sound?
It’s the sound of August being booted out the door.
I’m so ready for Fall.
I’m ready to wear sweaters and scarves and shoes with toes.
OK. Probably not shoes with toes. Let’s not get crazy.
And it’s still a little early to wrap up in a cute fuzzy scarf.
But being an impatient sort of person I decided to make up a scarf I could wear now.
It’s a super simple Ruffled Chiffon Scarf.
So cute huh? It really is Super Simple. :)
Here’s what you need for the scarf – it’s a wee little supply list:
-
2 Colors of contrasting chiffon or other lightweight fabric
(about 1/3 yd of the light fabric, a piece 4 ” x 22″ for the dark fabric) -
Matching Thread
-
Sewing Machine
Cut out the following pieces:
Out of the light fabric – cut a large rectangle, 7″ x 45″
and 4 small rectangles, 4″ x 11″ each
Out of the dark fabric – cut 2 small rectangles, 4″ x 11″
Hem one long side of the large rectangle.
To do this, turn under the edge 1/4″, then turn under 1/4″ again, so that the raw edge is hidden.
If you need help keeping the fabric folded as you sew, you can press the folds into place first.
Repeat with the other side.
Press the hems down so they lay nice.
Hem (the same way) the short sides of the small rectangles.
Hem the bottom long edge of the small rectangles.
To prevent the edges from fraying, zigzag stitch along the top edge of the rectangle.
Sew a gathering stitch on the top side, 1/4″ away from the edge.
You can put your machine on the largest straight stitch and sew, leaving long ends of thread. Pull one thread on one side and the fabric will gather.
You can also lightly hold your spool of thread as you sew this stitch and the fabric will gather on it’s own.
Leave the thread ends long and adjust the gathers so that the top edge measures the width of your hemmed scarf. (about 6″)
Repeat this process for all the small rectangles, including the contrast fabric rectangles.
Line up the gathered side of one small rectangle with the short side of the scarf, right sides together.
Sew the two pieces together with a 1/2″ seam.
Fold the first ruffle over so that the right sides of both are showing.
Measure up from the seam 1 1/2″ and mark with a fabric marker or pins.
Place a contrasting ruffle along the marks, right sides together, so that the hemmed edge of the small rectangle points towards the body of the scarf.
Sew with a 1/2″ seam.
Repeat these steps one more time with a light colored rectangle.
Sew the three remaining rectangles on the opposite end of the scarf in the same pattern.
That’s it!!
You’ve made a simple lightweight scarf so you can celebrate Fall – no matter what the weather is!

That is some nice sewing Miss Toes. I don’t think my machine makes stitches that well, maybe it needs a tune up. Another fine job, it looks wonderful. Thanks so much for linking, I always look forward to your projects :).

Very pretty! This is still lightweight, so I like than you can pretty much use it all year. I’m definitely not ready for closed toe shoes and long sleeves, but a little scarf is always nice!

Oh, it’s so pretty! My tween just took sewing lessons in the Spring and I think we could make one of these together. She just started middle school and has really gotten into clothing. I’m teaching her the ways of the thrift world and how you can dress well on very little money. I want to encourage her to make as much as she can so thanks for sharing this.
