I am so excited about this project! I have been dying to do a furniture refinish for a while – well I dove in with both feet!
We have been in need of a new Entertainment System for a while – everything was out in the open and games and components and cords were all out there and messy for everyone to see. Yuck.
I fell in love with the idea of converting a dresser to our new entertainment system and I LOVE how it turned out!
The bright pop of turquoise looks so great in the room and I am so happy that all the games and wires and paraphernalia don’t show anymore!
And here’s the before!
I started with this fabulous curvy dresser we found on Craigslist – she was super pretty but kind of scratched up and worn.
So I am BY FAR not a furniture refinishing expert – so don’t take me as a super authority. ;) But I can promise you that if I can do this – you can!!
Materials used:
Sandpaper
Wood Putty (for filling scratches and holes)
Primer – I used Valspar primer – 5 cans
Spray Paint – Tropical Oasis – 7 cans
Minwax Wood Stain in Pearl Gray
Dust Mask
I started by sanding the top of the dresser since I wanted that part to be stained gray.
I can’t stress enough to wear a good dust mask if you’re sanding – especially on older pieces. I will confess that mine was not as well fitted as it should have been and I was sick with a cold for 2 or 3 days from breathing in the gunk. So learn from my mistakes k?
Once I’d removed all the stain from the top and it’s sanded smooth – I applied the gray stain. I used about 3 coats.
After the stain was dry I covered the top with plastic and taped it off, making sure all the stain was covered. Now it was all ready for priming!
I started with the drawers. I removed the hardware and sprayed on the primer.
While the drawers were drying I worked on the body of the dresser. Doug put up this super awesome Paint Room in the garage for me – I felt like I was in a science lab or something.
I removed the slats and drawer stops for the top three and center sections that wouldn’t have drawers anymore. I filled the holes with wood putty and sanded them smooth.
Then I covered the body with a couple of coats of primer.
I also painted the hardware white for a nice bright look!
Once the dresser and drawers were primed, I painted them with about 2-3 coats of spray paint. It is so fun to see the color go on – it really makes the transformation fun!
When everything was dry we cut pieces of white beadboard to lay in the spaces where the drawers would be open – to finish off the shelf and make it even.
Doug also cut out some snazzy inserts for the drawers that I covered with some yummy Amy Butler fabric.
I just used spray adhesive to stick the fabric to the wood – and trimmed the back so it would lay flat.
Once everything was finished I added back on the hardware and we filled it up! I decided not to distress it – but I’m leaving that open as an option for the future. Depending on how much wear and tear it gets! :)
I’m so happy with how it came out!
The contrast of the gray wood stain with the bright turquoise goes with the room so perfectly.
And it’s plenty big enough for the crazy big TV and all the “gear” that the guys have!
It’s not perfect – but I’m so proud of how it turned out!
I’d love to know what you think too!

Wow! Just found your site and love your creativity! One thing I would love to see is how long it took to make your projects and maybe cost associated with them. I think many people think, “oh, she just whipped that up” but in reality, it took hours/days to complete it. :-). Love how the dresser came out! Wish it were warm enough here in Maine to tackle spray painting a flea market find medicine cabinet with a cute chicken wire door. You have me totally inspired!
Great job!

You should be proud because it is very beautiful. My husband is going to kill me but I think I will be haunting freecycle and craigslist for a dresser to fix up for our big tv, surround sound, ps3, satelite box and whatever else he has on the current stand. I would love nothing more than for all of the unsightly cords to disappear and for the tv area to look as beautiful as yours. And don’t worry about it not being perfect because it is those imperfections that give it character that make it unique!

Bev, this is just wonderful! I love the idea of upcycling rather than stressing out to buy some expensive piece of dedicated furniture! Love the color choices, too. You’ve inspired me!

I love the color and the shine on this piece. Our old TV fit in our cabinet. When we got a new one it didn’t. But it dit fit on top. I thought it wouldn’t look right but it does.
Hope you and your family are doing well.

Wow I just love that piece!! And you did such a fabulous job refinishing it! It works amazingly as a TV console. There’s this armoire that I really want to refinish and turn into a desk center for my brother…just have to get him to agree to it. I know what you mean about getting that itch to refinish–I have at least 3 dressers to paint and tons more little items but it’s like 2 degrees here so I’m waiting a bit. I’m sure the second it’s like 50 degrees I’ll start because I can’t wait!!!

It’s so pretty! You found the perfect dresser to convert – love how curvy it is! Great color too

You must have left out the “not perfect” pictures. I L.O.V.E. it! I’m going against the grain, but I don’t like everything. Sometimes I look at a distressed piece and think, ok when does the refinishing happen? Some are just too over the top for me. I think your shiny turquoise is perfect and I’d do it in a heartbeat if it wouldn’t look horrible against our sage green walls :-).

Wow Bev! This turned out great!!!

AWESOME!! What a beautiful re-make!! I find it hard to take that plunge to spray paint ‘good’ wood furniture, but it’s ALWAYS worth it!

This is gorgeous – what a project!!! hmmm, gives me some food for thought – my townhouse is furnished by craigslist and Salvation Army. The only new things we bought when we moved here were mattresses. It’s a rather eclectic look but why pay $3000 for a large oak bedroom set when you can get it for $600 plus a small moving charge!! And I don’t have the money to buy new.
How many days/hours approx. did it take you to do this??
I am amazed – you are one crafty lady – and your blog is the first one I’ve ever read – you do a great job of giving instructions with good pics.
thanks

Amazing! I have dresser that I have been wanting to do the same thing to. Right now it is holding the TV…until our nasty winter passes. Not going to paint it in the house. Job well done on yours.

This is adorable!!! I live in the UK right now but am moving back to the States next year and have been collecting a bunch of different pieces to re-do once home, I have a dresser very similar to this! Now I want to attack it haha!! Good Job!!
Gina says
Wow!!!!! this is awesome!!!!!! You did a great job and I love the color!!!
Linda says
Thanks for sharing your creative project. I have a dresser very similar and after seeing your finished prize, I think I will try it! I have a hutch with mirror that I plan to leave on it. I will place bead board over the mirror and caulk around it. I think it will look more like an entertainment center that way.
Hope mine turns out as beautiful as yours!
