Hello all! I’m so excited to share with you today’s project!
I’ve had a deep and abiding love for vintage sheets for some time now, which you probably know if you’ve visited here any length of time. :) I have used them for all sorts of little projects, but I wanted to do something big with them – and I’m finally getting to show my new Vintage Sheet Charm Square Quilt today!
Since vintage sheet fabrics are usually colorful florals, plaids and stripes, I wanted for this first (and yes, I must make more!) quilt to be pretty simple and just let the fabrics shine. So the quilt is a simple charm square quilt!
If you’re not familiar with a charm square, it’s just a 5″ square of fabric. It’s a great quilt to make for beginner, all you have to do is so the squares together in a row, then sew the rows together. Easy peasy!
I backed it with one of my favorite sheets and I used a fun little plaid sheet for the binding. It’s sooo soft and I am crazy in love with it!
The quilting is an allover floral done by my regular quilter – Julie Williams, she always does an amazing job!
A lot of people have asked where I get my vintage sheets and I’ll share my secret with you. ;) I look everywhere! Thrift shops, antique shops, barn sales, Etsy, Ebay and my favorite vintage Instagram shops. If I see them, I pick them up! You never know when you’ll need to make another quilt. Which for me will be very soon!!
Don’t you love it?! Have you ever made a charm square quilt? I’d love to hear about it!

I this charm quilt! Since I live in an RV this not a lot of room to work on quilts. The charm quilt will allow me to sew a row of squares first and since the weather is perfect here in Arizona I can put the rest of it together outside on a table. I will let you know how it comes out. And maybe send you a photo of it. Thanks so much.

I forgot the word LOVE this charm quilt and Flamingo Toes, too.

I love this quilt and your site. I have several vintage chenille bedspreads and would love to pair them with vintage sheets into a quilt. The hunt is now on for vintage sheets! Thank you for sharing!

I am going to start my first quilt! Thanks for the tip! Love, love the one you have made!! I have gotten so many great ideas from Flamingo Toes!!

I have made one quilt, the Sleepy Puppy quilt at Susys Sitcom.com and I don’t want to say how many times I redid the HST’s. I was finally satisfied with it and gave it to a friend of my brothers that had a baby boy.
Your quilt is beautiful and I love all the colors. The Readers Digest Condensed Books complement the vintage sheets. Have a nice day.

So pretty! And what a great idea using vintage sheets! Thank you, Susan

Hi Bev, I’ve made many quilts but my favorites are the simplest- like the charm quilt. Yours is fantastic!!! I want to grab it and go take a nap :)
LOVE IT!

This reminds me that simplicity is equally as beautiful as the more challenging quilt patterns. Who wouldn’t love this quilt to cozy up to? Nicely done…

Your stuff is so cool! Appreciate the up-cycle aspect of it too! The blog name is a HOOT! So love it!
Amanda says
Absolutely breathtaking! You’ve inspired me, thank you! I’m a collector of vintage sheets too and this is a lovely way to use those “small but too precious to throw away” scraps.
MaryLou Biedermann says
Love it! Is there a way to “brighten” vintage sheets? The ones I seem to find are a little dingy. No spots or anything, just overall a little … gray.
TIA

This is so lovely! I’d love to pin your quilt. Have you ever considered adding a pin button to you blog?
Beverly says
Yes Kim! I used to have one and forgot to add it back in after my blog redesign. Thanks for the reminder!
Kristi Rediske says
Beautiful! I do have a question- do you put thin batting in between?
Beverly says
Thanks Kristi!
Yes, there is a thin batting in-between. Let me know if you have any other questions! :)

Lovely finish. I have quite the stash of vintage sheets I need to put to use.
Monique says
That turned out amazing! I love the soft colors. From now on I’ll be on the lookout for sheets, as well as buttons ( another weakness of mine :0). Thanks for sharing!
Montague says
Where do you find these fantastic vintage sheets? I’ve seen them in a few of your projects and they’re always beautiful. Garage sales, maybe? Really cute turnout.
Hugs,

I love it! I’ve made 4 vintage sheet quilts. One for me, one for my daughter and one for each of my besties. I take mine everywhere when we travel. They are so soft and colorful. Your’s is beautiful!! I picked up most of my sheets at thrift stores for a couple of dollars each. They were fun to hunt for and the finished product is worth the trouble!

This is so gorgeous, Bev! I have been collecting vintage sheets, but I haven’t made anything with them yet. I think this may be the inspiration I need. Do you use all-cotton sheets or poly-cotton blend? Most of the sheets I have are of the poly-cotton type.

So they are now calling them vintage. Great as i find anything patchwork charming… it always brings back memories of staying at my grandmothers house as a child. If i had one i dont know if i would drape the bed with it or hang it on the wall..

This quilt is a showstopper. Beautiful.

This is lovely! I can’t sew a stitch – which would really disappoint my grandmother – but I can appreciate the talent of those who can. Thanks for sharing at Over the Moon!

This is gorgeous! Oh my goodness, I need to make one. I even love the flower quilt stitch. This would be perfect on a chair for spring. Thanks for sharing with us at Merry Monday this week!

I love vintage sheets for backing….so cozy, but have been chastised by “real” quilters for using worn out sheets as they won’t survive.
Create With Joy says
Congrats – your lovely quilt is one of our DIY Features at this week’s Inspire Me Monday Party at Create With Joy!
Carol, The Red Painted Cottage says
Bev, I’m not a quilter, but I really admire all the beautiful colors and pattern on your quilt. Thank you so much for sharing this last week at Share Your Style!

What a creative inspiration this is! Thanks so much for sharing at the Favorite Things Blog Hop last week. I featured this in my Monday blog post, “A Collection of Creativity” at Vintage Mama’s Cottage. I have been a quilter for many years, and I love anything and everything vintage, so this post immediately caught my eye. Hope to catch up with you again this week at the hop! What if we don’t have access to a quilter, how would you quilt a large quilt like this fab one of yours?
Carolyn says
Your quilt is beautiful!
I made a vintage sheet quilt/comforter a few years ago but used 6 inch squares in a Trip Around The World design. I need to do another one of these, love vintage sheets! http://cjs-sewingroom.blogspot.com/2011/10/vintage-sheet-comforter.html
Kelly says
It is beautiful…it doesn’t look like you used more than 4-5 of any one sheet fabric! How many sheets did this take? I LOVE all the soft patterns and colors!! Every time I’ve looked for sheets to make a quilt with they are always ugly with ugly colors. I can only imagine how long it took you to get all the sheets you had to have had to make this beautiful quilt!
Kelly says
Hi Bev…just BEAUTIFUL!! I am in some quilting groups and have been discouraged from quilting a vintage sheet quilt top I made because some have said the sheets are harder to quilt! I will trust you over any of them so are there any secrets to quilting sheet quilts that you recommend? I’m now going to quilt my quilt top after seeing your beautiful quilt!! So excited!!!
Beverly says
Hi Kelly!
My quilter didn’t have any problems with it! I have made a ton of projects with vintage sheets and I’ve never noticed a problem sewing with them. I hope you have fun with yours!
Bev

What an awesome post. You should do a line of material in vintage colors and patterns. Great job.
Teresa W says
Beverly,
For clarification sake, are you cutting up your vintage sheets to make the 5″ squares? I can see your vintage sheet for backing and binding but am unclear about the quilt top itself.
I love vintage sheets but did not know I could be collecting them!!!
Thank you!!
Teresa W in Oklahoma
Beverly says
Yes Teresa! In some cases I did that, but I also found a shop on Etsy that sells them in 5″ squares so you get a nice variety. Here’s a link! https://www.etsy.com/shop/VintageFabricStudios?ref=simple-shop-header-name&listing_id=1148050568
