Even though I’ve been sewing for a few (ahem) years, I just love learning new tips and techniques. I don’t think you can ever assume you know everything about a skill – there are always new ways to do things and even if you’re an expert it’s so fun to see how other’s do things and brush up on your knowledge.
Since Marissa and I started Sew Our Stash I’ve been shying away from zippers a bit – especially invisible zippers. Oh I can pop in a zipper in a zipper pouch or pillow – no problems. But I felt like my zippers in clothing looked a little messy and sketchy. No bueno. But then I came across this class on Craftsy – Mastering Zipper Techniques. And it was a FREE class! Helllloooooo. Come to mama.
Up until a couple weeks ago I didn’t even realize Craftsy had free classes – so I was excited to find this one! It was a longer class than I was expecting too – with tons of info.
I definitely had some favorite parts of the class –
- I loved being able to skip around to the different chapters – and within the chapters too.
- I am a bit impatient – so as weird as it sounds I really liked being able to bump up the speed the class played. I put it on 1.5 and it just zipped along. Perfect for my short attention span. ha.
- Through out the classes they had little tips that popped up on the screen to emphasize things.
- You can add little notes to yourself throughout the class and they will be saved along with the class. So smart. You can also ask the community/teacher questions and see what others think in a little running commentary section on the side – that you can enlarge or minimize.
I thought the invisible zipper section and the zipper with a lining sections were super helpful – especially since that’s where I needed the most help. But even if you’re a beginner you will find lots of great tips – like how to shorten a zipper and how to stabilize it while sewing it in.
Now I’m super eager to try out some of my patterns that have zippers – even the dreaded invisible zippers aren’t scary at all. I will have something fun to show off in next month’s Sew Our Stash post for sure!

THANKS for sharing this essential info on ZIPPER TECHNIQUES. Sometimes when you sew a zipper on a different type of fabric, you need some hints when sewing.. . as you don’t have experience. Through CRAFTSY website, these videos are FAB. I’m certain many sewists will be pleased with this info.

That sounds awesome! Since I don’t know all of the sewing jargon, being able to visually see a tutorial would be perfect for me. I’ll have to check these out!
