One of my goals this year was to work on my hand lettering! I use so much lettering in my hoops and embroidery and I want it all to eventually be MY handwriting – not fonts! The timing was perfect because my good friend Amy Latta from One Artsy Mama just came out with this amazing book – Hand Lettering for Relaxation! (aff link)
The book launched yesterday but I’ve had a copy for a few weeks and I’m working my way through it – because the awesome thing about this book is that it’s a workbook! There are step-by-step chapters and instructions with little hand lettering projects for each chapter. It’s so great! Let me show you some of my progress.
I bought a little inexpensive sketch book so I could practice lots with each chapter – it’s worked out perfectly. At the end of each chapter Amy has a cute hand drawn page where you can do your phrase for the chapter. They’re fun to color in too!
I clearly need a lot more work, but I’m only on chapter 8 so I’ve got lots more to learn!
I love that she not only teaches hand lettering in lots of different styles, but she includes the cute decorative features that make hand lettering so fun – like these banners I was practicing here.
It’s totally doable, even if you’ve never done any kind of lettering because Amy takes you through each skill and breaks it down into easy to follow steps. I am having a blast working through it. It’s my winding-down activity each evening – it’s kind of therapeutic to sit and work on my lettering at the end of each day!
