Evanora’s Necklace – Oz Inspired Tutorial

We LOVE watching movies together as a family!
Sometimes it’s a little hard to pick one everyone wants to see, but we had no trouble agreeing that we were all looking forward to watching Oz, The Great and Powerful!

We all really enjoyed it too! The gorgeous colors, sets, and costumes were some of my favorite parts – along with the fun story.
(Though the flying monkeys gave me the heebie jeebies. No thank you.)

After watching the movie this weekend I was inspired to create my own version of Evanora’s Necklace!

Evanora is one of the main characters – played by the beautiful Rachel Weisz. Throughout the movie she wears a gorgeous emerald necklace on a coppery chain. Here’s a little shot of it –

Obviously she’s a friendly-type gal. With good taste in jewelry.

I wanted to update her necklace just a bit, so it was a little more my style. I thought it would be fun to use a vintage(ish) emerald brooch!
You can’t really tell in this photo either, but her chain looks like it’s made up of tiny copper colored beads. Well, I took the easy way out there.
Rather than make a chain with thousands of seed beads (sounds fun right?) I thought it would look just as awesome to wrap a piece of cording with copper colored chain. And I love it!

This is a super easy necklace to do too – you could use this tutorial to turn pretty much any brooch into a pendant!

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own:

• Necklace Cording (mine already had the hardware attached)
• Small copper colored chain (I used about 1 1/2 packages of 96″ long chain)
• 2 small pieces of thin wire
• Brooch
• Bail
• Jump rings (make sure one is large enough to go over the cording and chain)
• Jewelry Glue

Start with your necklace cording and chain. You can see I purchased a necklace cording piece that had the closure attached. If you can’t find one, you can easily create your own from supplies at your local craft store.

Cut a small piece of your thin wire, about 1 1/2″ inches long. Thread the wire through one end of the chain and fold it in half.

Wrap this thin wire around the necklace cording, right up against the closure hardware. Make sure the ends are folded flat against the cording.

Begin wrapping the chain around the cording, making sure that it lays flat as you go. You will want to cover up the wire at the beginning.

Continue wrapping the cording with the chain. If you need to connect two chains together, use a small jump ring, the same color as your chain.

Once your cording is all wrapped, thread another piece of wire through a link of chain at the end, then wrap the wire around the cording.

Now your cording is all covered with chain and awesome.

If your brooch doesn’t have a loop to make it a pendant, glue a bail onto the back of the brooch. Add a jump ring (or two in this case) so the brooch will hang from the chain.

And you’re all done! Now you have a fabulous necklace that is inspired by a fun movie!
