I have such a FUN necklace for you today!
Don’t you love jewelry like that? Pieces that just make you happier when you wear them?
(Please say I’m not the only one like that. . . )
As soon as I saw the original of this necklace it made me smile. I had a great time making it too – it was quick and easy – and it’s sooooo customizable!!
Ready to see?
Here’s my Bow Tie Necklace!
And here’s the inspiration:
It’s a pin I found that is from a shop called Old Soul New Heart that has closed down.
Isn’t it a fun design?? I love the “Bow Tie” look!
The tutorial is quick and pretty simple too – you could make up 3 or 4 today to go with all your fun new outfits for spring. Which will hopefully be here soon.
Or maybe just to wear on Mondays. This is a perfect Help-it’s-Monday-I-need-something-to-cheer-me-up necklace.
To make your own version, you’ll need:
Ribbon (or fabric cut to 2″ wide) – 45″
2 Ribbon Clamps – 3/4″ wide
5 – 15″ lengths of chain
2 Jump Rings
You’ll also need a sewing machine, needle and thread, and flat nosed pliers.
Begin by cutting a 21″ length of ribbon. Fold the ribbon in half so the short ends meet. Sew the two sides together with a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Turn the piece right sides out and very lightly press.
Cut another piece of ribbon 21″ long. Fold this piece in half vertically, so the long sides meet and right sides are together.
Sew down the long edge with a 1/4″ seam allowance.
Turn right side out and lightly press.
Tuck each short end of this tube into a ribbon clamp. Close the clamp with your flat-nosed pliers.
Fold the wider tube you sewed first so that the short ends overlap in the center back section.
Place this folded section on the lower side of the thin fabric tube. This will be your bow. Pinch the center together and baste the bow to the tube with a few stitches. Make sure the ends are tucked in on the back side and not visible.
Cut a 3″ length of ribbon and fold it into thirds. It should be about 3/4″ wide. Wrap the folded piece around the center of the bow. Tuck the ends under on the back and sew down, catching the small tube and the back side of the bow.
Now our bow tie part is done!
Cut 5 different chains 16″ long.
Open a jump ring and add the ends of the chains to it. Make sure you open your jump ring by pulling the ends open like the photo below. Don’t open the jump ring by pulling it wide. The ring will weaken that way and look funky too when you try to close it.
Add this jump ring to the bottom loop of one of the ribbon clamps on your bow tie and close the ring.
Repeat for the other ends of the chain and add them to the other side of the bow tie.
And that’s it!! How easy peasy is that??
I think it would be cute with a fun polka dot print – or even a nice neutral linen. I think I’ll try that next!
I’d love to hear what you think!!
I’d also love to know if you have a piece of jewelry that just makes you smile to wear it! :)

I have a tutorial request. :) My in-laws send always give me random jewelry that I wouldn’t ever wear. Most recently I received a set of 3 chained bracelets only long enough to fit around my wrist. When I opened up the package, I immediately thought of your tutorials. I wondered if you could come up with a new tutorial that would feature the use of jewelry-on-hand, or if you had a tutorial that had some shorter length chains in it.
