One year for Christmas my sister created a family portrait of sorts as my gift. Using a shadow box frame, she painted the background to resemble a landscape and attached family member likenesses, even my dog, fashioned from polymer clay. I love it to pieces!

My mom used to make all my clothes when I was a kid. Looking back…that was AWESOME! The fact that she took the time and ENERGY (she also worked full time) to do that for me, just because I asked her to make some outfits for me to wear to school. It was great. I try to make an outfit for my daughter every couple months…sometimes more, but sadly, sometimes less. I think I’ll make her something again this weekend.

I still have the knitted clothes and doll. My Grandmother made baby doll clothes for my 22′ doll one year and for Tammy and Skipper another year. She sewed complete wardrobes using Simplicity patterns. My dad made a doll cradle for my favorite baby doll. We did handmade many years growing up.

Well, this woman has never met my son, but was so kind and made him a throw size quilt. It really warmed my heart. She and my mother would always talk about their families and she makes these quilts for her loved ones and strangers. It is red with a vintage cowboy print on it. My favorite handmade gift was an embroidered pillowcase made by my grandmother. She had been bitten by a rattlesnake some years before and had nearly lost her right hand, so she had to learn to use her left hand for more things. I know it was a trial for her to embroider the pillowcase. Her enthusiasm and grit gave me an overwhelming desire to learn embroidery. She taught me very patiently and I made her a pillowcase in return. I was 8 years old and have been embroidering ever since. I have arthritis and carpel tunnel, but still find time to embroider. She is gone now, but her legacy remains.
